Globalstar Satellite Phone Coverage

Before choosing a Globalstar service plan, it's important to know where your satellite phone will work. Globalstar provides voice and data coverage across many regions, but service is not available everywhere.

Unlike satellite networks that relay calls between satellites, Globalstar relies on regional ground stations. For a call to connect, both your phone and a ground station must be within range of an overhead satellite. As a result, coverage is limited in some areas, particularly in mid-ocean regions, near the poles, and across much of Africa and Asia.

Review the current Globalstar Voice and Data Coverage Map below to check service availability for your destination.

Globalstar Voice and Data Coverage Map

Actual coverage may vary depending on ground station availability, local licensing, terrain, buildings, satellite positions, and equipment use. For the best connection, use your phone outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Always confirm coverage and roaming availability before traveling.

Globalstar Home Zone and Roaming

Eligible Globalstar North American Orbit and Galaxy customers can roam within the designated Home Zone without additional airtime charges, subject to their plan terms.

Keep in mind that Home Zone eligibility and satellite coverage are not the same. Being within the Home Zone does not guarantee service at every location. Check the current coverage map and confirm roaming conditions before traveling internationally.

How the Globalstar Satellite Network Works

Globalstar uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to connect satellite phones with the traditional telephone network.

When you make a call, your phone sends a signal to a satellite passing overhead. The satellite relays that signal directly to a regional ground station, which connects your call to its destination.

Globalstar's network also uses a technology known as path diversity. When multiple satellites are available, more than one can help carry the same call. This provides alternative signal paths and helps maintain the connection as satellites move across the sky or an obstruction affects one of the signals.

Globalstar satellites orbit approximately 1,414 kilometers (879 miles) above Earth. Because they operate much closer to the ground than traditional geostationary satellites, signals travel shorter distances, keeping voice delays low and conversations feeling natural.

This network design provides a practical way to stay connected in supported areas where conventional cellular service may be unavailable.

What's New with Globalstar?

Globalstar continues to upgrade its satellite infrastructure to support existing services and future connectivity needs.

Current Satellite Network

Globalstar's operational constellation is currently organized in a 24-satellite configuration, known as Walker-24. The company is working to expand and replenish its satellite network.

Replacement Satellites Launched in 2026

In August 2026, Globalstar successfully launched eight replacement satellites. Following deployment, the satellites entered testing and commissioning before joining regular network operations.

Third-Generation Satellite System

Globalstar is also developing its next-generation C-3 satellite system, planned to include 48 satellites plus six in-orbit spares. In October 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) authorized the system for operations in the United States, marking an important step toward its future deployment.

Supporting Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite

Globalstar's satellite network also supports Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite, allowing users of compatible iPhones to contact emergency services by text when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable in supported regions.

Apple's satellite features operate separately from the Globalstar satellite phone airtime plans offered on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Globalstar

Globalstar currently describes its operational network as a 24-satellite constellation. Eight replacement satellites were launched in August 2026 as part of its ongoing network upgrades. The company's planned third-generation system will include 48 satellites plus six in-orbit spares. These figures represent different stages of the network's development, not one combined operational total.

Globalstar satellites operate in low Earth orbit at approximately 1,414 kilometers (879 miles) above Earth's surface. This relatively low altitude helps minimize signal travel time, supporting voice communications with little noticeable delay.

A Globalstar satellite phone connects to a satellite overhead, which relays the call directly to a regional ground station. The ground station then connects the call to the telephone network. When multiple satellites are available, they can provide additional signal paths to help maintain a stable connection.

No. Globalstar satellite phone coverage is regional and depends on both satellite visibility and ground station availability. Service is limited or unavailable in certain mid-ocean regions, near the poles, and across much of Africa and Asia. Coverage also depends on local licensing, terrain, and other environmental conditions. Always check Globalstar's current Voice and Data Coverage Map before purchasing a plan or traveling.
