Inmarsat Global Xpress

First global Ka-band commercial satellite service that will deliver seamless, globally available, high-speed broadband connectivity on land, at sea, and in the air – provided by a single operator.

Overview

The GX system has been designed to support global coverage and enable global mobility. The system includes the space segment and ground segment to provide complete GEO-visible earth connectivity.

The Inmarsat-5 satellites operate with a combination of fixed narrow spot beams that enable Inmarsat to deliver higher speeds through more compact terminals, plus steerable beams so additional capacity can be directed in real-time to where it’s needed.

Operating in the resilient Ka-band, while integrating seamlessly with our proven L-band network, Global Xpress allows customers across aviation, maritime, enterprise and government sectors to have reliable and assured access to high-throughput communications.

With Cisco, we have also developed the Inmarsat Service Enablement Platform (ISEP) and the Inmarsat Gateway, which will deliver a whole new world of innovative, content-rich applications – developed by our Certified Application Partners – tailored to meet Global Xpress users’ needs.

Applications Enabled by Global Xpress

  • Manned/unmanned Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (AISR)
  • Government maritime
  • Live full-motion video
  • Operational theatre backhaul
  • Tactical communications
  • Video teleconferencing
  • Command and Control (C2)
  • Situational awareness
  • Battlefield Information Systems
  • Broadband IP network interconnectivity
  • IP multicast
  • Disaster recovery
  • Emergency response

Worldwide Mobility

Inmarsat-5 F1, the first of our new-generation satellites was launched in December 2013, and Global Xpress entered into commercial service providing critical communication services in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia in July 2014.

Because Global Xpress users are always near the peak of one of our worldwide beams, Global Xpress delivers consistently higher performance than any other solution in the market.

Fleet Xpress Service Plans

Fleet Xpress plans are available with different maximum and committed bandwidth levels to support vessel operations, business applications, and crew connectivity.

Available Fleet Xpress Bandwidth

Maximum Bandwidth Committed Bandwidth Data Structure Typical Applications
1 Mbps Downlink
256 Kbps Uplink
MIR only or entry-level CIR Unlimited or allowance-based Email, reporting, telemetry, and basic web access
2 Mbps Downlink
512 Kbps Uplink
Multiple CIR options Unlimited Routine vessel operations and crew connectivity
4 Mbps Downlink
1–2 Mbps Uplink
Multiple CIR options Unlimited Cloud applications, video calls, and larger onboard networks
8 Mbps Downlink
4 Mbps Uplink
Higher CIR options Unlimited Data-intensive operations and larger crews
Up to 16 Mbps Downlink
5 Mbps Uplink
Custom CIR options Unlimited High-demand commercial, offshore, cruise, or specialized operations

MIR is the maximum available information rate. CIR is the committed information rate reserved for the connection.

Available bandwidth depends on the installed terminal, RF configuration, vessel requirements, and selected service package. High-bandwidth plans may require a high-power terminal configuration.

Government Use

Global Xpress is the only worldwide commercial satellite network that's interoperable with MILSATCOM Ka-band networks. High Capacity Military (HCM) capability makes it easy for the military to supplement their satellite capacity for training, en route communications and mission support, using existing WGS-certified terminals.

Affordable Maritime Connectivity

Global Xpress is a cost-effective approach to wideband. It enables access to high-performance Ka-bandwidth through less-expensive compact terminals at a lower cost than existing VSAT service.
