RedPort Optimizer Satellite Router
Description
Controlled Satellite Data Access
Satellite data connections often have limited bandwidth or usage-based billing. Computers and mobile devices may consume data through software updates, cloud synchronization, notifications, and other background processes without the user realizing it.
The Optimizer is designed to manage this traffic before it reaches the satellite connection. Its firewall can block or allow traffic by port, protocol, IP address, domain, website, or service. Whitelisting and blacklisting controls make it possible to limit the network to approved applications and reduce unnecessary airtime use.
Wi-Fi and Ethernet Networking
Once connected to a compatible satellite phone or terminal, the Optimizer creates a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi hotspot for laptops, tablets, and smartphones. A wired LAN port is also available for compatible network equipment.
This arrangement allows several personal devices to access one satellite connection without repeatedly reconnecting USB cables or configuring the satellite terminal on each device. The administrative interface provides access to firewall settings, network status, service controls, and Wi-Fi configuration.
Satellite Phone and Terminal Compatibility
The Optimizer supports IP-based satellite broadband terminals through its satellite WAN port. Supported applications may include Iridium Certus, Inmarsat BGAN and FleetBroadband, VSAT, and other compatible Ethernet-based terminals.
Selected handheld satellite phones can connect through the USB port. Compatibility depends on the phone model, USB driver, cable, and supported RedPort or XGate configuration. Published network support includes equipment operating on Iridium, Inmarsat, Globalstar, Thuraya, and compatible VSAT services.
Local and Satellite Voice Calling
The built-in PBX can create a local phone network when the Optimizer is connected to a supported satellite voice terminal. Users can make calls through compatible smartphone applications, SIP-enabled phones, or a standard telephone connected to the RJ-11 port.
Local extensions can communicate over the onboard Wi-Fi network without using satellite airtime. Calls routed outside the local network use the connected satellite terminal’s standard voice service or an optional RedPort VoIP subscription. Supported VoIP configurations can provide up to four simultaneous calls.
Email, Web, Weather, and Messaging
The Optimizer is designed to work with XGate and compatible XGate-based services for compressed satellite email, web access, weather information, and related applications. These services can reduce the amount of data transferred compared with standard, unrestricted internet use.
The router also supports SMS through compatible terminals, GPS tracking, NMEA GPS repeating, and optional shared web compression. XGate, VoIP, tracking, and compression services require separate subscriptions where applicable.
Multiple Connection Options
A compatible USB cellular modem can be connected when terrestrial mobile coverage is available. This allows the local network to use cellular service instead of satellite airtime where supported.
The Optimizer can also work with RedPort Halo Wi-Fi Extender systems to bring a distant shore-based Wi-Fi signal into the local network at a marina, basecamp, truck stop, or similar location. The Halo system and cellular modem are sold separately.
Setup and Network Management
The satellite terminal connects to the SAT Ethernet port or USB port, depending on the equipment type. Users then connect their devices to the Optimizer Wi-Fi network or LAN interface and manage the router through a browser-based dashboard.
The current wXa-223 model includes a Services Center interface and Quick Whitelist controls for permitting or blocking commonly used messaging applications. More advanced settings include port forwarding, network address translation, firewall rules, usage reporting, remote support access, and network security controls.
Installation Considerations
The SAT and LAN Ethernet interfaces provide passive PoE. RedPort warns that these ports can damage incompatible Gigabit Ethernet equipment because the passive power arrangement differs from normal data-only Ethernet connections.
Only approved or properly matched equipment should be connected to these ports. Installation should follow the RedPort guide, especially when connecting computers, network switches, satellite terminals, or a Halo extender.
Support and Service Configuration
Router functions such as basic Wi-Fi routing, firewall management, PBX access, and GPS/NMEA repeating are included with the hardware. XGate email, compressed web browsing, VoIP, tracking, and other managed services may require separate activation and recurring service fees.
Satellite Phone Store can assist with terminal compatibility, satellite service, router setup, and the selection of any required cables or subscriptions.
