Satellite Communication Beyond Cell Service

The inReach Messenger Plus uses the Iridium satellite network to maintain communication where cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. With an active subscription, it supports two-way texts, check-in messages, weather forecasts, location sharing, tracking, and interactive SOS communication.

The device can send messages directly using its physical controls. Pairing it with the Garmin Messenger app provides a more familiar smartphone interface for longer conversations and media messaging.

Photo, Voice, and Group Messaging

The Garmin Messenger app allows users to exchange photos and voice messages up to 30 seconds long over satellite. GPS coordinates can be included with text, photo, or voice messages to provide additional location context.

The app also supports group conversations, emojis, message reactions, and texts up to 1,600 characters. When cellular or Wi-Fi service is available, the app uses that connection and switches to the Iridium network when conventional coverage is lost.

Interactive SOS Support

The protected SOS button connects the user with Garmin Response, a staffed international emergency coordination center. During an SOS, the user can communicate with response coordinators and receive updates while assistance is being arranged.

Photos and voice messages can also be shared through the Garmin Messenger app during an emergency, helping coordinators better understand the situation and communicate details to appropriate responders.

Tracking and Navigation

The inReach Messenger Plus can record and transmit location points so approved contacts can follow a trip through a shared tracking page. Check-in messages and GPS coordinates can also be sent directly from the device.

TracBack navigation provides guidance toward the beginning of the recorded route. When paired with the Garmin Explore app, users can plan courses, view their track, save activities, and review remaining distance to a destination.

Compact and Water-Resistant Design

The communicator measures 7.8 × 6.4 × 2.3 cm and weighs 117.2 g, allowing it to fit easily in a pocket or equipment bag. Its monochrome display remains readable outdoors, while physical buttons provide straightforward operation.

An IPX7 water rating protects the device against incidental immersion in up to 1 meter of water for as long as 30 minutes.

Extended Battery Life and Safety Charging

The rechargeable battery provides up to 600 hours when sending a text message or location every 10 minutes in low-power messaging mode. It can also send up to 250 photo or voice messages on a full charge under favorable satellite conditions.

Safety charging allows the inReach Messenger Plus to provide limited power to a depleted smartphone. This is intended to restore enough phone power to compose and send a message through the Garmin Messenger app rather than serve as a full-capacity power bank.
