Centralized Antenna Management

The IM3 provides one management point for a multi-antenna maritime VSAT installation. Its rear-panel connections support three antenna control units, allowing the system to monitor and coordinate as many as three compatible antenna systems.

This arrangement is useful where separate antennas are installed to reduce blockage from vessel structures, support different frequency bands, or provide equipment redundancy.

Automatic Antenna Switching

The mediator can switch between available antennas when the active antenna becomes blocked, moves outside its usable coverage area, or is no longer the preferred connection. Intellian describes its mediator platform as supporting smarter blockage mitigation, improved connection resilience, antenna diversity, and reduced service interruption.

Switching can be managed according to the installed system configuration without physically moving RF cables between antennas and modems.

Multi-Band Modem Connections

The IM3 provides dedicated RF and control interfaces for C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band modem configurations. The installation manual identifies modem receive and transmit connections, antenna control-unit ports, management Ethernet, serial console connections, and a Ka-band BUC interface.

This makes the system suitable for vessels combining different satellite bands or services, subject to modem, antenna, and network compatibility.

Monitoring and Configuration

The mediator can be accessed through Intellian’s web-based management interface for system setup, antenna configuration, monitoring, and firmware management. Front-panel status indicators provide basic power and connection information, while the management port allows a technician to access the system locally.

Professional Below-Deck Installation

The IM3 is designed for installation below deck in a dry, cool, and ventilated location near the antenna control units and satellite modems. It supports rack or table mounting and operates from a universal 100–240V AC input.

Installation and commissioning should be completed by qualified maritime satellite technicians. The final configuration depends on the antennas, satellite modems, frequency bands, RF cabling, and onboard network architecture.
