External Iridium Reception for Vehicles

A satellite phone requires a reasonably clear view of the sky to communicate with the Iridium satellite network. Inside a vehicle, the roof and surrounding structure can obstruct the phone’s built-in antenna.

This magnetic antenna can be positioned on the vehicle exterior while the connected phone or dock remains inside. It is useful for drivers, field teams, emergency personnel, remote workers, and travelers who need to use compatible Iridium equipment from within a vehicle.

Portable Magnetic Installation

The antenna uses a magnetic base that attaches to a suitable ferrous metal surface without drilling permanent mounting holes. Its compact patch-style housing is approximately 2.1 inches in diameter and 0.6 inches high, making it easy to store and move between vehicles.

For reliable attachment and antenna performance, it should be placed upright on a clean, stable metal surface with an open view of the sky. Magnetic mounting may not work on aluminum, fiberglass, composite materials, or non-magnetic vehicle panels.

1.5-Meter Integrated Cable

The antenna includes an attached 1.5-meter, or approximately 5-foot, RG-316 coaxial cable. This length is suitable for routing from a vehicle roof or other exterior mounting point to a phone adapter or docking station located nearby.

The integrated TNC male connector connects to equipment with a compatible TNC female interface. Iridium handheld phones generally require a model-specific antenna adapter or compatible docking station, which is sold separately unless expressly included in a larger package.

Iridium Voice and Data Compatibility

The antenna operates across the 1616 to 1626 MHz Iridium frequency range and supports compatible Iridium voice and data equipment. Its right-hand circular polarization matches the requirements of the Iridium satellite system.

The antenna does not provide satellite service by itself. A compatible Iridium terminal, antenna adapter, active service plan, and sufficient view of the sky are still required.

Weather-Resistant Construction

The antenna is specified for outdoor operation and carries an IPX7 water-resistance rating. Its operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C supports use in a wide range of environmental conditions.

Although the antenna is designed for exterior use, the cable should be routed carefully to prevent crushing, abrasion, sharp bends, or damage from doors and windows.

Device and Adapter Requirements

Compatibility depends on both the Iridium device and the adapter installed between the device and antenna. Published compatibility includes the Iridium 9505, 9505A, 9555, and 9575 Extreme, as well as devices or docks equipped with a suitable TNC female antenna connection.

Before ordering, confirm the connector and adapter required for the specific phone or dock. The antenna cannot connect directly to every Iridium handheld without an adapter.
