Covert Vessel Security Alerting

The Ship Security Alert System provides a discreet method of notifying the designated shore authority when the vessel is under threat. When an installed alert button is activated, the LT-3100S transmits a security message through the Iridium satellite network without producing a visible or audible general distress alarm aboard the vessel.

The transmitted message contains the vessel’s identifying information and current position. Once activated, the system continues sending the security information until the alert is reset or deactivated by authorized personnel.

Two Independent Alert Buttons

The kit includes two red SSAS alert buttons so the vessel can provide more than one covert activation point. Their exact locations should be determined by the vessel operator, security officer, applicable regulations, and the approved Ship Security Plan.

Typical installations place one control near the bridge and another in a separate secure location known only to authorized crew. Each button includes a 50-meter cable for connection to the LT-3140S Interface Unit.

Dedicated Test Control

A separate green test button allows the crew or service personnel to check SSAS operation without intentionally initiating a live security alert. The test function supports routine inspections, drills, and commissioning while keeping test procedures separate from the concealed red activation controls.

Testing must follow the current Lars Thrane instructions and the vessel’s security procedures to prevent an unintended transmission.

LT-3140S Interface Unit

The supplied LT-3140S Interface Unit connects the SSAS buttons to the LT-3100S GMDSS terminal. It also provides expansion connections that can support compatible GMDSS alarm panels, a printer adapter, Bridge Alert Management equipment, and other approved bridge interfaces.

The interface unit requires a protected indoor installation and a separate DC power connection. System wiring and configuration should be completed using the current Lars Thrane installation documentation.

Iridium Satellite Transmission

The LT-3100S uses the Iridium satellite network to provide global GMDSS and security communications, including coverage over polar and high-latitude routes. The SSAS kit does not operate independently and requires a compatible LT-3100S system, active service, correct vessel programming, and a functioning satellite antenna installation.

Professional Installation and Configuration

SSAS controls are security-sensitive equipment. The alert buttons should be installed discreetly, protected against accidental activation, and accessible only to authorized personnel.

Configuration must include the correct vessel identity, position source, alert destination, and communication settings. Final commissioning and testing should be documented in accordance with the vessel’s flag-state, classification, SOLAS, and ISPS Code requirements.
