Intellian MMW Ku-band 400W BUC(KU1-400B-A2-2130110) VCM-1514
The Intellian VCM-1514 is a Mission Microwave MOAB 400W extended Ku-band Block Upconverter for professionally configured maritime satellite systems. It converts the modem’s L-band transmit signal to Ku-band and amplifies it before the signal reaches the antenna feed.
Its high-power output is intended for large maritime VSAT systems that require greater uplink capability for demanding communications traffic. The unit uses Mission Microwave’s solid-state GaN amplifier platform and is designed for installation close to the antenna feed, helping reduce losses through long waveguide runs.
Satellite Phone Store can help verify the antenna platform, Ku-band frequency plan, modem, feed assembly, power requirements, mounting arrangement, and control interfaces before ordering.
Description
High-Power Ku-Band Transmission
The VCM-1514 performs the transmit-side conversion and amplification required by a Ku-band satellite system. It accepts the modem’s lower-frequency transmit signal, converts it to the required Ku-band uplink frequency, and increases the signal power before transmission through the antenna.
The BUC is one component of a complete satellite terminal. It requires the correct antenna, feed assembly, modem, control equipment, power source, cabling, and active satellite service.
400W MOAB Amplifier Platform
The unit is based on Mission Microwave’s MOAB 400W Ku-band platform. This amplifier class provides up to 400W saturated RF output and approximately 200W of usable linear output, depending on system configuration and operating conditions.
The higher output is intended for applications requiring a stronger uplink than lower-power maritime BUCs can provide. Actual network performance depends on the antenna gain, satellite beam, modem settings, waveform, service plan, weather, and link budget.
Extended Ku-Band Configuration
The KU1-400B-A2-2130110 designation identifies this unit as an extended Ku-band configuration. It must be matched to the satellite operator’s uplink frequency plan and the antenna’s RF components.
A BUC with the same nominal power rating may use a different frequency range, input connector, reference source, power interface, or waveguide arrangement. The full manufacturer part number should therefore be verified before replacement.
Solid-State GaN Design
Mission Microwave develops its BUCs around gallium nitride solid-state amplifier technology. The 400W MOAB was designed as a more compact and power-efficient alternative to larger traveling-wave-tube amplifier and upconverter arrangements.
The platform draws approximately 1,300W of primary power while producing around 200W of linear RF output. Final electrical requirements should be confirmed against the specific VCM-1514 system documentation before installation.
Antenna-Mounted Installation
The BUC is designed to operate close to the antenna feed. Locating the amplifier near the feed reduces the length of the high-frequency output path and helps limit losses that would otherwise occur through longer waveguide assemblies.
The outdoor enclosure is built for mobile and fixed satellite installations, but mounting, cooling clearance, weather sealing, grounding, and electrical protection must be handled as part of the engineered antenna installation.
