Global Emergency Alerting

The PLB1 operates through Cospas-Sarsat, the international satellite system dedicated to search-and-rescue alerting. Activation transmits a unique registered identity and encoded GPS coordinates to rescue authorities. The service does not require a paid subscription, cellular coverage or a commercial satellite plan.

GPS Position and Local Homing

An integrated GPS receiver determines the beacon’s location and includes it in the 406 MHz distress message. Ocean Signal states that a reliable GPS fix can typically provide positioning within 100 meters.

Once responders reach the surrounding area, the 121.5 MHz homing transmitter and approximately one-candela LED strobe provide additional tools for locating the person carrying the beacon.

Compact Manual Operation

The protective flap helps prevent accidental activation while keeping the controls accessible. In an emergency, the antenna is pulled out fully before the covered activation button is pressed for one second. Indicator lights show activation, GPS acquisition and transmission status.

The PLB should be positioned with its antenna vertical and its GPS antenna unobstructed. It is intended only for situations of grave and imminent danger.

Battery and Routine Testing

The sealed lithium manganese dioxide battery provides more than 24 hours of operation at -20°C. Its specified replacement interval is seven years, based on the expiry date marked on the beacon.

Battery service must be completed by an authorized service center. Replacement is also required after emergency activation, when the marked expiry date is reached or if testing indicates that the battery has been used. A self-test function allows routine checks without sending a full distress alert.

Waterproofing and Flotation

The PLB1 is waterproof to 15 meters and tested to withstand a one-meter drop at -30°C. Its small housing fits into a pocket, mounting cradle or compatible lifejacket installation.

The standard PLB1 does not float by itself and is not designed to operate while floating in water. Over water, it must be securely tethered and held clear of the surface during operation. A flotation pouch is a separate accessory for most markets; Australian and New Zealand versions are supplied with one permanently attached.

Registration and Support

A PLB must be registered with the national authority responsible for its programmed country code. Registration connects the beacon’s 15-digit HEX ID with owner, vessel and emergency-contact information, helping rescue authorities assess an alert.
