Reusable Visual Distress Signaling

Unlike a single-use pyrotechnic flare, the EDF1 can be switched on and off and used repeatedly while battery capacity remains. LED circuitry maintains consistent light output as the battery discharges, providing a controlled visual signal without flame, heat, or pyrotechnic material.

The EDF1 is intended to help rescuers visually locate the user after an emergency has already been reported. Ocean Signal recommends carrying a PLB or EPIRB for transmitting the initial distress alert.

Four Light Modes and SOS Signaling

The EDF1 provides four selectable operating modes:

• Economy
• Bright
• Ultra
• Beam

Economy, Bright, and Ultra provide increasing levels of multidirectional light output. Beam mode concentrates the light in a narrower direction when signaling toward a known vessel, aircraft, or search team.

The SOS function can be activated in any mode and flashes the Morse-code SOS sequence every 20 seconds. A protective sliding tab helps prevent accidental activation while the flare is stored.

Visibility from the Water and Air

The lens distributes light through a beam exceeding 30° around the full 360° azimuth. Light is also directed into the hemisphere above the unit, improving visibility to aircraft and helicopters involved in search-and-rescue operations.

The manufacturer specifies a maximum visual range of up to 7 miles, although actual visibility depends on weather, background lighting, observer height, and atmospheric conditions.

Replaceable Battery Pack

The EDF1 uses an Ocean Signal LB10F lithium manganese dioxide battery pack that can be replaced by the user. Economy mode provides more than six hours of operation; Bright mode provides approximately half that duration, while Ultra mode reduces operating time to approximately one-third of Economy mode.

A built-in battery test checks the LEDs and battery condition. Ocean Signal recommends performing the test no more than once per month because frequent testing reduces the battery capacity available during an emergency.

Compact and Waterproof Construction

The EDF1 measures 18.7 cm tall and weighs 155 g, making it compact enough for a vessel grab bag, life raft, emergency pack, or hiking backpack. It is waterproof to 10 m at 20°C and operates from -20°C to 55°C.

The flare should be held clear of the eyes when activated because its high-intensity LEDs can cause discomfort or temporary visual impairment.

Carriage Requirement Considerations

The rescueME EDF1 is not approved as a substitute for pyrotechnic flares where carriage regulations specifically require approved pyrotechnic signals. Ocean Signal directs customers needing a USCG-approved electronic visual distress signal to the ACR ResQFlare.
