Lars Thrane LT-3140S Interface Unit

Expanded GMDSS Integration

The LT-3140S adds the physical interfaces needed to connect optional safety and bridge equipment to a Lars Thrane GMDSS terminal. The standard LT-3100S can provide the core GMDSS functions without this unit, but the LT-3140S is required when adding functions such as remote alarm panels, GMDSS printing, or extended SSAS integration.

This makes it suitable for commercial vessels whose installation must connect the satellite terminal with equipment elsewhere on the bridge, in crew areas, or within the vessel’s alarm and monitoring systems.

Alarm Panel Connections

The interface unit supports Lars Thrane LT-3150S GMDSS Alarm Panels through its CAN connections. Remote alarm panels can provide audible and visual distress notification away from the main control unit and may include dedicated distress and dimming controls.

The number and placement of alarm panels should follow the vessel’s applicable GMDSS regulations, classification requirements, and installation plan.

Printer and Safety Message Support

A compatible GMDSS printer can be connected through the LT-3160S Printer Adapter. This allows Maritime Safety Information and other supported safety messages received through the satellite terminal to be retained as printed records.

The printer adapter, printer, and associated cables are selected separately and must be compatible with the Lars Thrane system.

Bridge and External Equipment Interfaces

The LT-3140S provides a combination of Ethernet, RS-422, GPIO, and CAN connections for supported bridge and safety equipment. These interfaces may be used for alarm signaling, position input, SSAS functions, remote panels, and other approved system integrations.

The exact wiring and configuration depend on the connected equipment. Installation should therefore be completed using the current Lars Thrane manual and the approved vessel-system drawings.

Separate Power and Indoor Installation

The LT-3140S connects to the main control unit by Ethernet but requires its own 12–24 V DC power supply. The supply circuit must be protected by a fuse or automatic circuit breaker, and Lars Thrane specifies a maximum 5 A protective rating for the interface unit.

Its enclosure is intended for a dry, protected indoor location. The unit should be installed where its connectors remain accessible while being protected from water, excessive heat, mechanical damage, and cable strain.
