Wi-Fi Access Through a Thuraya Phone

The XT-Hotspot converts the satellite data connection of a compatible Thuraya handset into a local Wi-Fi network. Smartphones, tablets, and computers can connect using their standard Wi-Fi settings, allowing users to access supported internet services without connecting each device directly to the phone.

The Thuraya phone remains the satellite terminal and must be switched to satellite mode with a clear view toward the serving satellite. The hotspot does not provide satellite connectivity by itself.

Satellite Data Performance

When using Thuraya GmPRS service, the hotspot supports download speeds up to 60 kbps. It can also use circuit-switched data at speeds up to 9.6 kbps. These speeds are intended for basic, low-bandwidth communication rather than streaming, large downloads, video calling, or modern media-heavy websites.

Actual performance depends on signal strength, network conditions, the connected handset, service configuration, and the number of devices using the connection.

Portable Wi-Fi Network

The router creates a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi zone with a published range of up to 30 meters under suitable conditions. Multiple users can connect simultaneously, although sharing the limited satellite data connection between several devices will reduce the available speed for each user.

The compact design is suited to mobile offices, relief operations, field research, energy projects, expedition teams, and vessels operating within the Thuraya service area.

Internal Battery and External Power

An internal 2,000 mAh battery provides up to approximately four hours of Wi-Fi access over a GmPRS connection. The battery can be charged with the included 5 V power adapter or through a computer using the supplied USB power cable.

Runtime varies with Wi-Fi activity, satellite traffic, connected devices, battery condition, and temperature.

Setup and Security

The XT-Hotspot supports IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n Wi-Fi devices. Its web-based configuration interface can be used to manage connection settings and wireless security, including WEP, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK.

A compatible Thuraya USB data cable is required to connect the handset to the hotspot’s USB hub. Manufacturer instructions indicate that this handset data cable is not included with the hotspot package.
